Principal Software Architect

Quinton Greene

I've been writing code since 2003, and a good share of that time went to unlearning what the first tutorials taught me. These days I live on the backend, in databases and the systems around them, and this is where I think out loud about it.

Specialties

What I do

Data migrations

A lot of my work has been getting a business's data out of the places it's scattered across and into one system it can actually run on.

  • 01

    Leaving old software

Moving years of records off a system you've outgrown and into the new one, with the meaning intact and not just the rows.

  • 02

    Consolidating sources

Pulling data that lives in five places into one, and finding out along the way that two of them use the same field name for different things.

  • 03

    Keeping it reconciled

Making sure the combined data stays trustworthy after launch day, instead of quietly drifting back apart.

Building software teams

I've built three development teams, mostly on my own, ranging from five developers to eighteen. Each one was shaped around where the business was headed, not just the work in front of it.

  • 01

    Hiring the right people

Hiring is the decision that's hardest to undo, so it's the one I spend the most time on. The goal is people who fit the work and each other.

  • 02

    Sized for the plan

Teams built to carry both the next quarter and the next few years, whether the business is expanding or changing how it operates.

  • 03

    Teams that stay

Turnover quietly erases what a team knows. Stability isn't exciting, but it's what lets a team get faster every year instead of starting over.
